RKSL Map System v3.3

Public User Guide

The Map System is an interactive atlas designed to help you explore the RKSL Studios created maps and assets.

Using the map you can:

  • Search for locations
  • View settlements
  • Explore infrastructure
  • Find military and government facilities
  • View roads and transport networks
  • Access related wiki articles
  • Measure distances
  • Plan routes
  • Generate grid references

No registration is required to browse the map.

Opening the Map

When the site loads you will see:

Print

The main map occupies the centre of the screen.

Selecting a Map

Use: Map Selector to choose an available island.

Examples:

  • BATUS
  • Bovington
  • SPTA - Salisbury Plain Training Area
  • Mach-Loop - Low Flying Area 7 (LFA7)

The map will automatically reload.

Searching

Use the search box at the top of the page.

Search by:

  • Settlement Name
  • Region Name
  • Military Base
  • Infrastructure
  • Roads
  • Grid References

Search suggestions appear automatically while typing.

Filters

To control what is displayed use:

  • Category Filter
  • Type Filter

Category Examples:

  • Settlements
  • Infrastructure
  • Military
  • Government
  • Transport
  • Tourism
  • Emergency
  • Telecoms

Types Examples

  • Types
  • City
  • Village
  • Airport
  • Harbour
  • Hospital
  • Military Base
  • Radar Site

You can select multiple options.

Map Layers

Available layers may include:

  • Roads
  • Areas
  • Grid Overlay

Toggle layers on or off using the layer controls.

Viewing Information

Click any marker.

A popup will display:

  • Name
  • Category
  • Type
  • Grid Reference
  • Description

If available:

  • Open Wiki Article

will appear.

Selecting the link opens the related wiki page.

Grid References

The system supports:

  • 6 Figure
  • 8 Figure
  • 10 Figure

grid references. Right-click anywhere on the map to display:

  • Coordinates
  • Grid Reference
  • Copy Grid Reference

Measuring Distances

Select:

  • Measure Tool

from the map controls.

Click on the map for the:

  • Start Point
  • End Point

The map displays:

  • Distance
  • Bearing

Range Rings

Select the Range Ring Tool:

  • Click a location.
  • Choose a distance.

Example: 1km 5km 10km

A ring will be displayed around the selected location.

Route Planning

Select: Route Planner

Add multiple points.

The system will calculate:

  • Total Distance
  • Estimated Travel Time

Grid Overlay

The map supports:

  • 1km Grid
  • 10km Grid

Enable the required overlay using the map controls.

Roads

Where available, roads are displayed as overlays.

Road classifications may include:

  • Primary Roads
  • Secondary Roads
  • Tracks
  • Footpaths

Use the Roads layer toggle to show or hide them.

NOTE: I have not yet imported the roads for most maps. It will come

Map Information

Select: Map Info

to view information about the currently selected map.

This includes:

  • Map Description
  • Status
  • Completion Progress
  • Statistics
  • Development Notes
  • Change Log

The information automatically updates when a different map is selected.

Compass

A compass is displayed on the map.

The compass indicates:

North

and helps with navigation and bearings.

NOTE: This is pretty much useless, I was going to allow the map to be rotated but it proved a bit pointless so this may disappear at somepoint

Scale Bar

A scale bar is displayed on the map. The scale updates automatically as you zoom.

Example:

  • 100m
  • 500m
  • 1km
  • 5km

Zoom Controls

Use: + or - to zoom in and out. You can also the mouse wheel or Touch Gestures on a tablet depending on your device.

Registered User Features

Registered users may have access to:

  • Saved Filters
  • Saved Searches
  • Saved Views Favourites

depending on site configuration.

Tips

Finding a Location Quickly

use:

Search

rather than manually zooming.

Finding Infrastructure

Filter by:

Infrastructure

then select:

  • Power
  • Water
  • Telecoms

types.

Military Analysis

Enable:

  • Military
  • Roads
  • Grid Overlay

for operational planning views.

Reading More Information

Most locations include:

  • Open Wiki Article

which provides detailed background information.
